| • Precise in-line real-time monitoring of slurry liquor-phase density using refractive index. • Drift-free measurement corresponding typically to within 0.5 Grams per litre Soda. • Rugged probe design for use specifically in the alumina industry. • PSZ Ceramic face with SAF2205 shaft.
Refractive Index Measurement Principle Every liquid has a Refractive Index (RI). RI is defined as the light bend angle of the liquid (Figure 1). The bend angle is directly proportional to the liquid concentration or density. The key with RI over other density measurement techniques is that RI measures the LIQUID PHASE of the solution, NOT the total density. In the Alumina industry, this enables accurate analysis of A/C and molar ratios without needing to compensate for variations in suspended solids.
How the AL-CAR-K Works The AL-CAR-K is an adaption of the K-Patents PR-01-S and has been used in many process environments. Industries include sugar, pulp and paper, chemical and food. This unit has been adapted to cater for measurement obstacles the rigors of the Alumina process create, such as scaling and erosion. Light is directed against the interface between a prism and the process solution. The fan of light meets the surface at different angles where fully reflected rays and partial refracted/reflected rays form an image (Figure 2).
The optical image is analysed by a microprocessor and the shadow edge interface is determined. The interface between the light and dark area is known as the critical angle. The critical angle changes depending on the RI of the solution which correlates to the liquor phase density. Measuring the critical angle rather than total reflected light provides COMPLETE IMMUNITY to suspended solids entrained air.
Unique design • Completely digital sensing techniques: no moving parts • Digital transfer of data between the sensor and indicating transmitter • Rugged all stainless steel external design • SAF2205 wetted parts with a PSZ ceramic tip. Optional exotic wetted parts available • Jacking bolts to facilitate removal from process • Pressure relief valve ensures no danger of pressure build up • Temperature compensation for changes in process temperature • No possibility of drift • No calibration required
Applications This product is equally suited for Red and White side processes. It can be used to monitor liquor-phase density in areas such as DBO and precipitation feed to provide accurate and repeatable control point measurements, resulting in LARGE SAVINGS in production costs. In applications where the A/C ratio or molar ratio varies significantly, we recommend using the AL-CAR-K conjunction with a conductivity device or periodic lab sampling to assist in complete concentration control. • Commissioning • Staff training • Exclusively available through Precision Light and Air
The instrument consists of three parts - the sensor, indicating transmitter and interconnecting cable. The “angle” mounting design (Figure 3): • Maximises mechanical self cleaning of the prism sensing area • Eliminates scale build up • Minimises the effect erosion
Measurements are NOT affected by flow rate so the unit is also able to be installed in any pipeline size, both side-stream and direct mainstream insertion. All essential information is displayed on the indicating transmitter with changes done through the keypad.
